Ma & Paw Kennel is dedicated to enhancing the human-dog relationship, based on mutual trust and respect, by providing quality, science-based education to dogs and their guardians.
Ma & Paw Kennel uses primarily positive reinforcement (+R) and negative punishment (-P) methods for the training and behavior modification of dogs. Our goals are to make training as fun as possible for the dog and the owner; to resolve behavior problems without doing any harm; and to keep dogs in their homes and out of shelters.
Gina Gables is the owner of Ma and Paw Kennel - Canine Training Services, established in 1991 and located in Simi Valley. Her training approach focuses on channeling a dog’s natural drives and instincts into behaviors acceptable in the human pack primarily through the principles of positive reinforcement and operant conditioning as well as through methods that appeal to the dog’s canine sensibilities.
Gina has successfully trained thousands of dogs (and their people) in disciplines ranging from basic obedience and extensive behavior modification to training personal protection dogs and herding dogs. She competes in stockdog herding trials. One of the Australian Shepherds she owned/trained was ranked 8th in the country in her division in sheep herding.
At the beginning of her career she was the resident dog trainer at Balcolm Canyon Pet Lodge in Ventura County for over 10 years. The Humane Society of Ventura County has hosted multiple training clinics with Gina at their Ojai facility. Gina has been entrusted with the Rattlesnake Avoidance Training program for the canine units of the Ventura County Sherriff's Department, Glendale Police Department, Simi Valley Police Department, and the Ventura County Police Department.
Gina is a member of the Ventura County Dog Fanciers. Gina focuses on the unique relationship between guardian and dog, and trains guardians to successfully recognize the specific needs of their animals. In addition to Gina’s hands-on experience training dogs, she has acquired formal education and training in several areas. In 1989, Gina graduated with high marks from K-9 Security Training in San Luis Obispo, California, where she completed a year-long comprehensive hands-on training course.
The course covered basic and advanced obedience, behavior modification, temperament testing, utility training, personal protection and guard dog training, breed categories, K-9 first aid and kennel management. She assisted in training police dogs for local law enforcement as well as security dogs for Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant. Veterinarians, kennels, pet shops and many satisfied clients highly recommend Gina Gables. They come back to her for repeat business and consistently refer new business. Since Gina began her business, she has worked with thousands of happy customers and her core customer base continues to build each year.
Gina continues to educate herself on the most up to date humane methods by attending live as well as online seminars.
In her free time she enjoys competing in many horse related as well as dog herding activities and swing dancing.
